Infertility In Nigeria

Infertility is defined as the inability of a couple to conceive after one year of regular unprotected intercourse. There are some factors that contributes to infertility in both gender which are
Age, Diabetes, weight problems, smoking, stress, sexually transmitted diseases(STDs)

The fertility rate in Nigeria is estimated to be 5.4, implying that the average woman can expect to have that many children during her life. Yet many Nigerians experience infertility. Chelsea Polis of the Guttmacher Institute, a think-tank, and her colleagues estimate that 31% of Nigerian couples fail to conceive a child after 12 months of unprotected sex—a rate at least as high as in the West.

Types Of Infertility In Nigeria

Infertility can be classified into two types:

 Primary infertility

in which no previous pregnancies have occurred

Secondary infertility

in which prior pregnancy, although not necessarily a live birth, has occurred. According to a study in Dec 2013, secondary infertility is said to be more common in Nigeria. This had been reported as a sequel to poorly managed pelvic inflammatory disease, resulting in utero-tubal damage and or pelvic adhesions.

Infertile Female Stigmatization In Nigeria

Globally, infertility creates problems for couples, especially for women, and Nigeria is not exempted. Their women are often blamed for couples’ infertility and suffer personal grief and frustration, social stigma, rejection, and serious economic deprivation. These women have a strong sense of stigma when others talk about their infertility, and therefore feel social withdrawal.

Most females suffering from infertility  in Nigeria often have a strong desire to conceive and are  sensitive to words such as “pregnancy” and “children.” Most of their peers already have children, and they feel different from others. They feel upset when asked about their children or when they face comments from others. They feel “pathetic” in the eyes of others and are considered a “joke.” To escape these inner thoughts and avoid embarrassing situations, they are unwilling to go to parties with friends who have children, participate in activities, or contact people, which might result in social withdrawal.

Male Infertility In Nigeria

Men with fertility problems in Nigeria may have a low sperm count or low testosterone. The risk of infertility increases as the man age. A man should
-Make healthy sperm that can fertilize the egg

-Have an erection and ejaculate so the sperm reaches the egg

Problems with either of these may mean the man is infertile.

Causes Of Male Infertility In Nigeria

Retrograde Ejaculation

This is when sperm goes backward in the body. They go into the bladder instead of coming out of the penis during orgasm.  Although you still reach a sexual climax, you might ejaculate very little or no semen. This is sometimes called a dry orgasm. Retrograde ejaculation isn’t harmful, but it can cause male infertility.

Sperm disorders

This includes defects in the quality or quantity of sperm produced and defects in sperm. The sperm may be oddly shaped, not moving the right way or not growing fully. Diagnosis is by semen analysis.

Varicocele

Varicoceles is a common cause of low sperm production and decreased sperm quality, which can cause infertility. Although, not all varicoceles affect sperm production. Varicoceles can also cause testicles to fail to develop normally or shrink. Varicocele is found in 16 out of 100 infertile men.

Obstruction

Sometimes the tube in which sperm travels can be blocked. This blockage can be caused by repeated infection, or surgery(such as vasectomy). Any part of the male reproductive tract can be blocked, with a blockage, sperm can not be released during ejaculation

Medication

Some certain medications can affect sperm production. These medications are given to treat some health problems like arthritis, depression, cancer, high blood pressure, infections

How To Diagnose Male Infertility

  1. Semen analysis: This test checks for problems with sperm, such as low sperm count and poor motility. Some men need a needle biopsy to remove sperm from the testicles and test it. For most men, this is the only test that will be needed in the workup of infertility.
  2. Blood test: A blood test can check testosterone, thyroid, and other hormone levels. Genetic blood tests look for chromosomal abnormalities.
  3. Scrotal ultrasound: An ultrasound of the scrotum identifies varicoceles or other testicular problems.

After 2 years of trying to conceive, we had pretty much given up. My husband’s sperm was watery, I found this and thought it wouldn’t hurt to try. After 2 1/2 months of my husband using this, I am 4.5 weeks pregnant! Wonderful supplement. My husband said he felt very healthy taking it and it didn’t upset his stomach. Thanks SpermBoost!!

                                         Esther

Using SpermBoost, I have found that I don’t need any other supplements. This product works great, even if you are not using it for boosting motility, the ingredients are very beneficial.

                                         Nofisat

I went for a test some days back and got the result today. I have been dancing all evening, the test came out great. All the parameters have risen to normal. Every single parameter is well within the healthy range. I couldn’t believe it. I really thank God and i testify that your product worked for me

                                  Peter

I was diagnosed with low motility, the doctors gave us several very expensive options on how to help us conceive. I couldn’t go through that route because of the expenses involved. So I did what I always do! Find a low-cost solution. I did online research to find natural products that boost sperm. I saw so many options but my mind was fixed on this, I guess the reviews helped too. I was diligent in my usage and I was patient, Now what I need everyone who has watery semen, low sperm count, or low motility to know is that technically it takes some days for healthy sperm to be created. So it won’t happen overnight but in the end, it worked!

Female Infertility In Nigeria

Female infertility is an inability to get pregnant and have a successful pregnancy. This is typically diagnosed after a woman has tried to get pregnant (through unprotected sex) for 12 months without a pregnancy

A study conducted in 2013 about female infertility in Nigeria says ‘Majority of infertile females in Nigeria have multiple and unnecessary visits to several hospitals for infertility care with little positive results despite time and resources spent. Quality of infertility care needs to be improved’

Causes Of Female Infertility In Nigeria

Ovulation disorders

Ovulation infrequently or not at all accounts for most cases of infertility. Problems with the regulation of reproductive hormones by the hypothalamus or the pituitary gland or problems in the ovary can cause ovulation disorders.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis occurs when tissue that typically grows in the uterus implants and grows in other places. This extra tissue growth — and the surgical removal of it — can cause scarring, which can block fallopian tubes and keep an egg and sperm from uniting.

Endometriosis can also disrupt the implantation of the fertilized egg. The condition also seems to affect fertility in less direct ways, such as damage to the sperm or egg.

Uterine or cervical causes

Several uterine or cervical causes can interfere with the egg implanting or increase the risk of miscarriage.

Damage to fallopian tubes (tubal infertility)

Damaged or blocked fallopian tubes keep sperm from getting to the egg or block the passage of the fertilized egg into the uterus. Causes of fallopian tube damage or blockage can include:

-Pelvic inflammatory disease, an infection of the uterus and fallopian tubes due to chlamydia, gonorrhea, or other sexually transmitted infections

-Previous surgery in the abdomen or pelvis, including surgery for ectopic pregnancy, in which a fertilized egg implants and develops somewhere other than the uterus, usually in a fallopian tube.

Unexplained infertility

In some cases, the cause of infertility is never found. A combination of several minor factors in both partners could cause unexplained fertility problems. Although it’s frustrating to get no specific answer, this problem can correct itself with time. But you shouldn’t delay treatment for infertility.
