NORMAL SPERM MOTILITY

What is normal sperm motility?

First of all, I will explain what motility is….

Motility is the ability of something to move.

Normal Sperm motility refers to the ability of the sperm to move efficiently and low sperm motility is a factor that leads to infertility in men.

Normal sperm motility is when your sperm motile count is between the range of 15 million to over 200 million sperm per milliliter (mL). If it is lower than 5 million, it means the sperm motility is low. If it is less than 1 million, this is severe poor sperm motility, this is also known as asthenozoospermia.

You can determine your sperm count by doing a semen analysis. This analysis can be done at your doctors office, fertility clinic or with an at-home test.

How can you analyse the motility of a semen?

This can be done in one of the four ways below:

  1. Percentile motile: This is the percentage of the sperm in a single ejaculate that is moving.
  2. Percentile motile concentration: This is the percentage of sperm that is moving in one measurement of semen, normally presented as millions of cells per mL.
  3. Total motile sperm count (TMSC): This is the number of sperm that is swimming in one single ejaculate. This is also the most relevant analysis to male fertility.
  4. Average path velocity (APV): This is the speed the sperms move and they are measured in microns per second.

Why does normal sperm motility matter?

Normal sperm motility matters due to the fact that it is one of the major reasons for fertility in men.

Around 60 to 80 million couples worldwide are seriously affected by infertility, and this differs from country to country.

Between 40 to 50 percent of couples being unable to conceive is the fault of the man.

When the man is responsible for infertility in a marriage, this means that there is an issue with the man’s biology and that is why he is unable to impregnate a woman.

This male infertility is the result of some form of deficiency in the semen, some of the most common reasons are:

  • Low sperm count
  • Low sperm morphology, (abnormal sperm shape)
  • Poor sperm motility…

Hindrances to Normal Sperm motility

There are many things that can hinder normal sperm motility, most especially the sperm health of the individual.

For instance, many men who have been diagnosed with low sperm motility may also have low sperm count or poor sperm morphology (the shape of the sperm). This is because sperm that is not formed properly cannot swim well.

Below is a list of some of the possible reasons not to have a normal sperm motility:

  • Overheating of the testicles
  • Exposure to chemicals
  • Exposure to extreme cold
  • Lifestyle habits like smoking, drinking and eating unhealthy foods in excess or
  • Any abnormalities in the male reproductive tract, like the varicocele (This is a condition of enlarged veins in the scrotum and has been associated with low sperm motility in men)
  • Infection
  • Testicular cancer
  • Testicular surgery
  • Injury
  • Undescended testicles

Another reason is if the man has infrequent sexual activity. If this is the case, the first ejaculate of the man will show a poor quality of sperm but the next ejaculate that is collected soon will show better sperm quality than the first.

Also, using hard drugs for a long time can definitely reduce your  fertility chances. Drugs like cocaine can surely affect sperm quality.

How can you cure low sperm motility?

Ways you can cure low sperm motility are:

  1. Exercise regularly

You can increase sperm motility by exercising regularly.

Because apart from it being good for your health, it can also boost your testosterone level and increase fertility.

Studies have shown that men who exercise regularly have a normal sperm motility than men who don’t exercise regularly.

Doing at least a half an hour exercise at least three times a week may increase your sperm motility, says scientists.

You could take up running/jogging for half an hour three times a week and will soon start seeing some improvements in your sperm motility.

2 Reduce exposure to phones

The possible negative impact of mobile phone radiation on the motility of the sperm has been recently established.

Too much exposure to mobile phones has been associated with reduced sperm motility.

Normal sperm motility can be affected by the influence of electromagnetic radiation which emits from phones, according to the research done by Igor Gorpinchenko and others on the influence of direct mobile phone radiation on sperm quality.

Try to limit your exposure to your phones.

I know it will be tough in this day and age where our phones are already a major part of our lives, but as a man, it may be the reason you are finding it hard to impregnate your spouse.

3 Quit smoking

Smoking is harmful to our overall health, whether you are a man or a woman.

Infact, quitting cigarettes is one of the best things you can do right now to make sure your boys start swimming like they are in the olympics.

The chemicals in cigarettes can cause damage to your sperm which will make it pretty difficult to impregnate a woman.

These chemicals can also harm the eggs in a woman.

Quitting the cigarettes can improve your fertility naturally and that could be one of the best decisions you make all year.

If you have made the decision to quit smoking, there are some ways you can go about it…

You can wean yourself off it gradually by reducing the number of cigarettes you smoke in a day continuously until you only take one stick per day…..

Then you take one stick every two days etc

Until you quit completely.

Another way is you could use self hypnosis. There are many tapes out there and binaural beats that can help you quit.

4. Reduce your alcohol intake

Avoid consuming alcohol heavily because it reduces your testosterone levels and then reduces your sperm motility.

Try cutting down your alcohol intake to no more than 3-4 units in a day.

Studies have shown that consistent heavy drinking, which is about 5 or more drinks in men in a two-hour time frame, have negative effects.

Drinking more than 14 drinks in one week can lower your testosterone levels and negatively affect sperm motility.

Some other ways alcohol affects sperm motility are:

  • Shrinks the testes
  • Changes the shape and size of the semen
  • Changing gonadotropin release

5 Maintain a healthy weight

Being overweight affects the quality of sperm you produce and reduces your chances of impregnating your spouse.

Having a healthy amount of weight can increase your chances of conceiving. But being overweight or even underweight can take you a much longer time to conceive.

Men who are overweight have low sperm motility and are not as fertile as men with a healthy amount of weight.

To tell if you weigh a healthy amount, use a body mass index (BMI) calculator.

And if your BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 you have a healthy weight.

Below 18.5 is considered underweight

If your BMI is between 25 and 29.9, it is considered overweight and

If your BMI records over 30, you are obese.
